Sport management jobs include event management, facility management (looking after venues), sport development (for community, regional or national organisations), sports coordinator (for instance in secondary schools), sport marketing and sponsorship, sport development advisor, management, high performance sport management or coach education.

If you are more interested in the exercise prescription and performance aspects of sport, you could work as a sport scientist, a personal trainer, exercise and activity promoter, sports conditioner or trainer.

If you are interested in education, options for careers include a school sports coordinator, a health and physical education teacher or a regional health and physical activity advisor.

Companies of all shapes and sizes do employ people with these skills, for instance medical centres, fitness centres, large companies or local councils, community-based organisations and schools.

Good health and nutrition is also vital for athletes to perform well, and Massey is an expert in teaching in this area. You can either specialise in nutrition, or overall health planning, or developing exercise programmes. When you graduate, you could work as a nutrition consultant in different areas of the community, from the elderly to children, or those with medical issues like obesity and diabetes.

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise is a great qualification if you are interested in being able to put together exercise programmes for fitness, health or rehabilitation. You’ll learn how to improve the health of people with a range of conditions, from obesity and diabetes to serious cardiovascular disorders. This is also the best option if you are interested in physical education. It can be followed with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching to qualify you as a secondary teacher.

If you would like to focus on the science of the performance aspects of sport, with potential to move into athlete and fitness consultation, another option is the Bachelor of Science with a major in Exercise and Sport Science – it will give you in-depth knowledge of the physiology of exercise, biomechanics, and motor control.

If you would like to focus directly on sport management, you can do a Bachelor of Sport Management.

You’ll benefit from Massey’s business expertise and you’ll develop your management skills while gaining an understanding of sport in its social, cultural and organisational contexts. The programme also has strong links to the sporting community. You’ll take part in our highly regarded practicums, which will give you relevant sport management experience before you even graduate!

The Bachelor of Science with a major in Nutrition would be a good option if you are interested in focusing on a career in helping sportspeople maximize their performance through nutrition. Many students do a BSc with a double major in Exercise and Sport Science and Human Nutrition.
