What career will I have?
A career as a history teacher or a historian are the two of the most obvious career paths after studying history. But there are also a number of other industries which will welcome people with your skills.
Museum curators almost always have high-level knowledge in at least one focus area of history, so if you like the idea of setting up cool exhibits in Te Papa, a degree in History can lead you to it.
Archivists also benefit from knowledge of history; this career is sort of a “modern historian” who selects which records will be preserved for future generations (such as population records and Parliamentary proceedings) and which records probably won’t be of interest to future generations (like your facebook entries on what you had for lunch).
Like many other programmes in the liberal arts, studying history gives you ample opportunity to develop critical thinking, research, analytical, and writing skills. These skills are widely applicable to a range of careers. Many history graduates use these skills to go into jobs that involve analysis, such as policy analysts.
